What is perfectionism?

If you look at the word perfect it literally means; A quality of perfection. Perfectionism means doing your best to do something to the best of your ability. A certain degree of perfectionism is a good motivator to get the best out of yourself. But with unhealthy perfectionism, you believe of yourself that everything you do must be perfect.

Because it is impossible to achieve the very best result always and everywhere, you often disappoint yourself or never finish anything. It's never good enough. You are never good enough. You doubt yourself, are extremely self-critical, and you let your self-esteem depend on your performance. Or you feel like you have to go on and on and on. Until you get it right, but that finish line is almost never in sight. An uphill battle that is actually unwinnable.

Perfectionism and anxiety

Perfectionism is often caused by unconscious fear. Fear of failure, fear of losing control, fear of rejection, fear of loneliness, fear of criticism or fear of not getting the appreciation you want. You then use your perfectionism to gain success, appreciation or love.
